Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred’s director says they made a brand new class that’s ‘very fresh for what people want’ instead of just making paladins again-

The mainline Diablo series hasn’t seen a new class for 10 years. The spiritborn, coming in Diablo 4’s Vessel of Hatred expansion on October 8, are an entirely new class for the series who fight with the power of animal spirits and only slightly resemble classes from prior games, like Diablo 3’s monks.

Blizzard deliberately created something new to keep Diablo from getting stale, associate game director Brent Gibson told PC Gamer in a recent interview. Even if that means fans will continue to beg Blizzard to add paladins one day.

Blizzard started by trying to “break all the boundaries and go big with the idea” of the spiritborn, rather than updating a class that has been done before, Gibson said. “The thing we cannot do is say ‘This is too hard, this is too risky, we’re not g…

After years of anonymity, gaming’s least famous but most recognisable voice has broken cover to chat PEGI 18, AI acting, and his €200 paycheque-

If you’ve ever watched a game trailer in Europe, you’ve almost certainly heard Richard Wells’ voice. He is, in his own words, “the guy who says ‘PEGI 18’ on all of your video games,” which is to say he’s the smooth baritone that lets you know a game’s age rating right before its trailer plays; the British equivalent of that ESRB guy who says “product not yet rated” before E3 trailers. He’s ubiquitous but—until he became a TikTok sensation—anonymous, and it turns out he only made €200 (£170) for his work.

“I’ve been a professional voice actor for 40 years,” explains Wells at the beginning of his first video on TikTok, “I’ve made at least 10,000 recordings, and spoken millions of words, but ironically, I’m best known for just two.” Those two are, of course, “P…

Sorry Apple, turns out 8GB of memory on a Mac isn’t anything like 16GB on a PC after all-

We reported a few weeks ago that Apple has been rather conspicuously claiming its MacBooks with 8GB were “analogous” to a PC with 16GB. Well, that claim has been tested and found to be comprehensively found wanting.

YouTube channel, Max Tech ran an 8GB MacBook Pro 14 up against a 16GB Lenovo Legion Windows laptop. And who’d a thunk it, 8GB on a MacBook is just as rubbish for serious workflows as it is on a PC.

Max Tech first did some baseline runs, then opened the Chrome browser with 10 tabs. As I type these words, I probably have about 60 tabs open, so that’s a pretty light load.

And yet it was still enough to begin to see the shortcomings of 8GB on the MacBook. Indeed, it was enough to already have the Mac using 400MB of memory swapped onto the SSD, which is obviousl…

The BBC dons its game dev cap to combine 2 things I fear and don’t understand- The UK General Election and Roblox-

In the ultimate team-up of ‘things I dread the societal consequences of’, the UK General Election is coming to Roblox. It’s courtesy of the BBC, and is meant to serve as “an engaging and fun way to learn more about the country’s election whilst interacting with [the BBC’s] top political experts.” Naturally, it’s been set up to coincide with the upcoming election on July 4, the first one the UK has had since, let me see, three prime ministers ago.

In practice, what that means is that the BBC’s Wonder Chase Roblox area—a big rambling space full of activities based on the Beeb’s shows—has had its heart converted into a mockup of 10 Downing Street, presided over by the watchful eye of Larry the cat, the real-life chief mouser to the cabinet office. Also presided over…

‘NFT For Britain’ idea proves too stupid even for UK government-

Remember back in April last year, when the UK government decided it was going to show off the “forward-looking approach” that it was “determined to take toward cryptoassets in the UK” by directing the Royal Mint to create a state-backed “NFT For Britain”? You might not, it was several prime ministers ago. Regardless, those plans have now been ditched.

Well, kind of. Economic Secretary Andrew Griffith said yesterday that “the Royal Mint is not proceeding with the launch of a Non-Fungible Token” after consulting with His Majesty’s Treasury, but noted that the proposal would be kept “under review”. You know, just in case NFTs suddenly become a really good idea.

Griffith didn’t say what, in particular, led the Treasury and Royal Mint to jettison the national NFT idea, but that h…

The exceptional Tomb Raider reboot, a game with 140K ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ reviews, is on-sale for the price of a cup of coffee-

Ten years later the fantastic job that Crystal Dynamics’ did with its 2013 Tomb Raider reboot has become even more apparent to me. The mature, 18-rated game took the campy, bright and cartoonish Lara Croft of earlier games and, instead, delivered a dark, hyper violent and at times gripping coming of age origin story with a strong female protagonist.

View Tomb Raider on Steam

Yes, there’s absolutely no doubting that this game, as well as its sequels Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, owed a lot to the excellent Uncharted series of games, but Crystal Dynamics delivered an action adventure platformer with a markedly different tone, protagonist and cast of supporting characters. It was a hit.

Fast forward and that…

Unprecedented ‘inside look’ at Call of Duty matchmaking debunks fan theories on SBMM and confirms our assumptions- ‘Skill is not the dominant variable’-

Call of Duty’s matchmaking is no longer a mystery.

Last year, Activision promised fans that it’d finally open up about how matchmaking works in Call of Duty. Today, it delivered: The unprecedented blog post dives deep into exactly which factors Call of Duty is looking for when grouping you with other players, and where its priorities lie. The post does not cover Warzone matchmaking or ranked modes.

It’s a longer list than you might assume. For instance: whether or not you have voice chat enabled affects matchmaking, as does what maps you’ve played recently. The blog also reaffirms comments from Activision studios over the years that Call of Duty values low matchmaking times and ping above all else. Yes, player skill is a factor too, but Activision says it’s not “the…

This Total War- Shogun 2 mod lets you play out the real historical war that inspired the FX TV show-

While PC gamers all over the place are flocking back to Fallout after having a great time watching the new Amazon TV series, I’m over here quietly despairing that there’s only a single episode of FX’s Shogun left to air. The new adaptation of the 1975 novel has been so excellent I even considered playing the 1980s PC games that tried to put their own spin on the story just like our news writer Joshua Wolens did, but then I came to my senses and went looking for options that aren’t quite as old as computers with 64 kilobytes of RAM.

And I found the perfect one in the first place I looked: the Total War: Shogun 2 Steam Workshop.

The Sekigahara Campaign jumps Total War: Shogun 2’s campaign forward in history approximately 50 years, to the 1590s. During the time period of the ga…

You can avoid the blood, sweat, and tears of planning your own custom loop PC with EK’s pre-configured kits now 24% off for Cyber Monday-

You can spend a long time trying to nail down the exact parts required for a full custom loop build. In a way, that’s a part of it. You really come to appreciate the PC you’ve built by the end of the process, as it’s one you’ve created from the ground up.

But if you’re less sentimental, you might just want someone else to put together a parts list for you. EZ PZ. That’s what EK does with its ‘Loop’ builds, and right now everything on its store is 24% off, which makes such a build that little bit more affordable.

Alright, affordable these builds ain’t, but every little helps when investing in something as expensive as a fully liquid-looped build. You’re looking at spending anything from $1,284 for the cheapest all-inclusive kit to around $2,628 for the so-called “Golden…

Whether or not Nvidia really has a chiplet-based RTX 5090 ‘under investigation’ its GPU future has to be multi-chip-

There is the suggestion going around that the green team is testing out a chiplet version of its top GeForce graphics card for the future Nvidia Blackwell GPU generation. This comes hot on the heels of another rumour stating explicitly that the Blackwell architecture is going to be used for data center silicon, too, and that this successor to Hopper will definitely be a multi-chip module GPU.

We’re at least a year out from the release of the Nvidia RTX 5090, but that’s not going to stop the rumour mill going into overdrive every time there’s the faintest whiff of next-gen silicon in the air. And that means we have to take every rumour with the requisite measure of salt given that at this point it’s all largely guesswork, conjecture, and hearsay.

The idea of Nvidia finally ma…

I was certain my next guess was going to be a winner three times today, although the first two of those turned out to be wrong in different ways. That was a fun game, though it felt like I was following a trail of letter-shaped breadcrumbs to the answer, even if it did end up longer than I would have liked it to be.

Today’s Wordle was almost—but thankfully not quite—a complete disaster for me. One yellow took too many attempts to turn green, and when it finally did I felt almost as clueless as I did at the beginning. After much fumbling in the dark I found myself with one guess left, and two words that’d fit perfectly in the strange gap I’d uncovered. I’m glad I made it, but I hope I don’t come that close to losing for a while.

You can score a 240Hz Samsung gaming monitor that gives true meaning to the term ‘ultrawide’ for $800 right now-

Technically any gaming monitor with an aspect ratio above of 21:9 or above is deserving of the title of ‘ultrawide’. But few have earned it like this Samsung Odyssey G9 DQHD.

Effectively two 1440p gaming monitors strapped together, this Samsung monitor comes with 49 inches of 240Hz, DisplayHDR 1000 panel to play with. That all sounds expensive, and I guess it still is, but it’s a bit easier on the bank account thanks to a deal that whips $500 off the asking price. It’s down to $800 over on Amazon today.

Just be sure to hit the $100 coupon check box for the full discount. Otherwise you’ll pay an additional $100 tax for being clumsy.

I fondly remember the first time I gawked at a 49-inch gaming monitor. It also was a Samsung and I was the envy of all the offi…
